Dear Seminary Family,

space
You may have heard that our 25th Anniversary commemorations will be including a Gala Silver Anniversary Dinner at the Poinsett Club on Monday, March 12, 2012. This elegant event has two main purposes: 1) Commemoration of God's Providence in the ministry of GPTS in the past, present and future; and 2) Building upon the foundation of God's Providence through fund-raising efforts.

The Board of Trustees has determined to keep ticket prices at or slightly above cost, so we will be depending on other aspects of the evening to raise resources for the seminary. These will include:

  • Dinner Sponsorships. We are asking individuals and businesses to make a donation to help cover overhead costs of the dinner.
  • Table Sponsorships. We are asking individuals and businesses to consider sponsoring a table. Essentially, this means they would buy 10 tickets to either distribute to their own guests or donate the tickets to the seminary to give to folks who might otherwise not be able to afford coming.
  • Silent Auction. We will need to obtain tangible goods or service items of value from businesses or individuals. These collected items will be offered for written bids during the evening of the dinner.
  • Pledges. During the evening, guests will be given an opportunity to pledge financial support to the seminary or make a one-time donation.
The first three of these efforts will require a concerted effort by all of us associated with Greenville Seminary. It is essential that everyone help out in order to insure the success of this fund-raiser. I am therefore asking you to go to work contacting people you know and the stores at which you shop or companies with which you do business about the possibility of becoming dinner or table sponsors. If you have a job, you might approach your employer. Assure them they will be acknowledged in the dinner program and at sponsored tables. This is an advertising opportunity for businesses especially, and their donation is usually tax-deductible.

The BIG EFFORT, of course — the one that will require leg-work on all of our parts — is the Silent Auction. This cannot succeed, obviously, unless we have valuable items to auction. Whenever you shop or dine out, look for opportunities to request donations for the silent auction. Or make some "cold calls" to the managers of businesses that might have items suitable for our auction. If you receive a donation, ask about the fair market value of the item and be sure to get full contact information from the donor, so we can send receipts. Here are some things to consider, but you can be creative and use your imagination in finding auction items:

  • Restaurant gift certificates
  • Sports items
  • Cruises/Trips/Vacations, including donated timeshare weeks
  • Baskets (collection of related items, goodies, and gift certificates, etc.)
  • Handicrafts or handmade furniture
  • Antiques
  • Electronic gadgets (guy toys)
  • Jewelry
  • A group day at the Children's Museum
  • Free "bounce house" rental for a birthday party
  • Memorabilia
  • Greenville Drive baseball season tickets and memorabilia (basket?)
  • Roller skating party
  • Kayaking or whitewater rafting for a day
  • Golf or tennis lessons
  • A round of golf for a pair or foursome, including carts, at a top country club
  • Paintball outing for a group
  • Martial arts lessons
  • Police ride-a-long
  • Factory tours
  • BMW Performance Driving School gift certificate
  • Introductory flying lesson
  • Chauffer or limousine service for a special event
  • Father/son charter fishing excursion
  • Mother/daughter spa day
  • Lasik eye surgery
  • Home decor items
  • Auto repair or maintenance services (especially for ladies)
  • Landscaping services
  • Community theater, symphony or performing arts center packages
If a merchant is unable to donate an item, ask about consignment. Find out the market value of the consignment item, which will then become our opening bid level; any amount of bidding above that would be our gain.

Watch Groupon, LivingSocial, My Upstate Perks and similar bargain/discount services for ideas and businesses to contact. ("Google" these services to view their deals.)

Remember also that you do not need to limit yourself to local businesses. If you know of special opportunities elsewhere in the country or world, follow up.

Finally, remember that we are looking for top-quality items (new or quality antiques and collectibles), not rummage sale stuff or cast-offs.

Here are some valuable tips: How to Obtain Fundraising Auction Donations
