This is a special time at Greenville Seminary. Less than two weeks ago, we welcomed our new students for a day of Orientation followed by a dinner for these students and their wives. Later that same evening, we gathered as a community for our annual Convocation service. The next day we had our summer picnic, organized by the Student Body Association. Now, classes are well underway, and just today the students officially welcomed Dr. VanDoodewaard as our newest member of the faculty.
New Student Dinner
At the end of Orientation, our Student Body Association hosts a dinner at the Seminary for new students and their families. This year, we are celebrating more than 42 new students, 38 of whom are enrolled in the Divinity program.
Convocation
By God’s grace, we conducted our 35th Convocation. Dr. Robert D. Cathcart of Friendship Presbyterian Church (PCA) in Hickory Tavern, SC delivered the convocation address.
“Only a burning love for Jesus Christ can sustain a lifetime of ministry and bear gospel fruit.” ~ Dr. Robert D. Cathcart | Pastor, Friendship Presbyterian Church (PCA)
Student Covenant
During the Convocation, our students publicly pledge to maintain the high standards of personal holiness and academic integrity which we expect of men preparing for gospel ministry, using the words of a Student Covenant written 200 years ago for students at Princeton Seminary.
Fellowship Activities
One of the benefits of studying in residence is the opportunity to enjoy time together with other men pursuing the same high calling. Dr. Richard D. Phillips described it this way, “The entire grid of the educational experience of Greenville Seminary is a fraternity of holy men, called by God, for this one thing – the ministry of the Word.” This unity of purpose is showcased in regular events devoted to fellowship outside the classroom. Already, students enjoyed the annual summer picnic, as well as a luncheon for Dr. and Mrs. VanDoodewaard.
It is a privilege to share these snapshots from the beginning of our new academic year. The Lord has been good to us, and He has used your support to enable us to continue our work of faithfully training another class of men for gospel ministry.
The instruction and activities at Greenville Seminary are almost entirely underwritten by financial support from friends and donors like you. Please pray that the Lord would continue to sustain us spiritually and materially, especially as we begin this new academic year.
