Back by popular demand, Dr. Pipa is offering his sermon analysis elective in the Applied Theology department. As part of this two-credit class, students will read preaching books and listen to exemplary sermons hand-picked by Dr. Pipa, with discussion to follow. Dates are July 27-31, 2020.
Instructor

Dr. Joseph A. Pipa Jr. grew up in Pensacola, Florida where he was converted and brought into church membership at the historic McIlwain Presbyterian Church (PCA). He attended Belhaven College and Reformed Theological Seminary (Jackson) before he was ordained into pastoral ministry in the Presbyterian Church in the United States (PCUS). He is a charter member of the Presbyterian Church in America (PCA), and currently serves as an active member of Calvary Presbytery.
He has pastored churches in Tchula, Mississippi; Houston, Texas; and Escondido, California. He received his PhD from Westminster Theological Seminary (WTS) in Philadelphia, and he has taught at both WTS and Westminster Seminary California. He has served as President of Greenville Presbyterian Theological Seminary from 1998 to 2020. He currently teaches full-time as Professor of Systematic & Applied Theology and President Emeritus.
Course Description
Sermon Analysis involves an analysis of the sermons of well-known preachers, considering their exegesis, homiletical method and structure, clarity, usefulness of the expositions, the experimental nature of the sermons, the approaches to application, and delivery.
