Volume 1 (2005)
The inaugural issue of The Confessional Presbyterian Journal in 2005 was a bit more modest in size than some of the later issues. It was 184 (approx. 209,520 words). This issue is out of print but available in a print on-demand volume. While it is more modest in size and perhaps more significant material appeared later, because this issue proved out all the design work that went into creating the journal, it remains a personal favorite of the General Editor. The “Reframing Presbyterian Worship” article by Frank J. Smith and David C. Lachman is an important piece, and it is available for free download here.

Volume 2 (2006)
The second issue of The Confessional Presbyterian began a growing trend toward fatter issues. It is 256 pages (approx. 276, 112 words). In the General Editor’s estimation, the most significant material here is the first part of the series on sixty years of literature on the subject of the Regulative Principle of Worship. Also with issue 2 we began a trend of running first-time translations of interesting if not important texts on a variety of subjects. This issue ran a translation from a work by the student of Samuel Rutherford, John Brown of Wamphray, Libri duo: in priori, Wolzogium, in libellis duobus de interprete Scripturarum, causam orthodoxam prodidisse demonstratur. In posteriori, Lamberti Velthusii sententia libertino-Erastiana, in libello vernaculo de idololatria & superstitione naper proposita, detegitur & confutatur (Amstelodami, 1670), on the subject of the universal visible church. This issue remains in print.

Volume 3 (2007)
This issue is 304 pp. (approx. 337,257 words). The third issue of The Confessional Presbyterian contains the second part of the series on sixty years of literature on the subject of the Regulative Principle of Worship. Several important articles appeared in this issue and two are free and online now, Matthew Winzer’s “True History of Paedo-Communion” (available here) and Woody Lauer’s “John Calvin, the Nascent Sabbatarian” (available here). The translation entry is the first half of a first time translation from John Brown’s large Latin work, De Causa Dei Contra AntiSabbatarios Tractatus (Roterodami: Apud Henricum Goddaeum, Bibliopolam: Anno [1674]) on the subject of singing the Psalms in public worship. This issue remains in print.

Volume 4 (2008)
This issue is 312 pp. (approx. 309,885 words). The fourth issue of The Confessional Presbyterian journal was the largest to date. A personal favorite piece in this issue was the translation of chapter 19 from Samuel Rutherford’s Latin lectures on the subject of the civil magistrate. The three part series was concluded based upon research into the federal period printers, T & J Swords. This issue remains in print.

Volume 5 (2009)
This issue is 328 pp (approx. 298,641 words). With this issue of The Confessional Presbyterian Journal (the fifth), we hit a five year stride, added a reviews editor, and began the full color portraitures by Mike Mahon. There is a lot to like about this issue and it would not surprise me if it is many’s favorite. It remains in print.

Volume 6 (2010)
This issue is 304 pp. (approx. 281,362 words). This sixth issue of The Confessional Presbyterian journal has perhaps the best looking cover if the editor consensus holds true generally. In 2010 James J. Cassidy and C. N. Willborn joined the staff to help edit articles and CPJ began to become more of a peer review publication. The issue remains in print.

Volume 7 (2011)
This issue is 256 pp (approx. 226,534 words). The seventh issue of The Confessional Presbyterian journal features the Scottish Reformer John Knox on the cover. Some find the image a bit scary; certainly the Queen of Scots feared him. It is drawn from the picture imagining the first Protestant communion celebrated in Scotland. I like it. This was another packed issue but I would single out the translation of the preface to the Constance hymnal (c.1533) as perhaps the most significant single piece in the issue, presented in translation with the original text in photo-reproduction. The issue remains in print and available.

Volume 8 (2012)
This issue is 296 pp (approx. 267,503 words). The eighth issue of The Confessional Presbyterian journal is noteworthy for introducing a new feature, Sic et Non. Views in Review. The subject was Westminster Seminary California Distinctives? which spread over two subsequent issues. Nick Batzig and Jeff Waddington joined Jim Cassidy and Nick Willborn as editors of the articles section. I am biased but I again find the translation piece to be a standout, a first time translation of one of Calvin’s tracts that has heretofore not appeared in English. Response to a Certain Tricky Middler is noteworthy for the principle Calvin articulates regarding things idolatrously abused which George Gillespie would pick up on and turn to a fully realized rule in his Dispute against the English Popish Ceremonies. This issue remains in print.

Volume 9 (2013)
In the ninth issue of The Confessional Presbyterian Journal we finally give Thornwell his due. The editorial view was that the stand out piece is Jeong Koo Jeon’s The Covenant of Creation and the Kingdom of God. The translation piece to go with the topic of Thornwell, is a new translation of Franciscus Gomarus on Roman Catholic Baptism. This issue remains in print.

Volume 10 (2014)
This issue is 272 pp (approx. 239,296 words). For the tenth issue of The Confessional Presbyterian Journal we feature Machen on the cover. This is another hard issue to pick favorites. The most feedback has been received on Dr. Willborn’s piece on “The Gospel Work of the Diaconate,” which paired with other pieces I know several sessions are using in deacon training. This issue saw the completion of the Sic et Non exchange over “Westminster Seminary California Distinctives?” Also, the lengthy piece on Thomas Rogers and Nicholas Bownd, while a niche study of Puritan Sabbatarianism and Elizabethan Puritanism, is significant for the discovery and transcription of an heretofore unnoticed letter the severe conformist wrote to the author of the first scholarly English Sabbatarian book, shedding additional light on the first Sabbatarian controversy in English literature. This issue remains in print.
