DEGREE PROGRAMS

A Program

Designed

to Train Pastors.

Our focus has always been training pastors, and the program designed to do this is our MDiv (also available as BDiv). Our MDiv is longer than most, with 124 credit hours required. It is designed to equip a man to be a pastor. It involves robust instruction in biblical languages; biblical content; theology; apologetics; pastoral counseling; and preaching.

Our instruction deals with the whole man. Extensive attention is given not just to academic instruction, but to mentoring and growth in godliness. All our full-time professors have at least five years of pastoral experience. Students are taught to be pastors by ordained men who served or serve as pastors.

All of this is done under the oversight of the church. We undertake our duties as a seminary in order to prepare men for ordination and for long-term service to the church. By God’s grace, over 92% of our divinity graduates still continue in pastoral ministry today – a record for which we are exceedingly grateful.

Our tuition costs are intentionally kept low through the generous support of donors and churches and many scholarships are available for divinity students. We want our students to graduate with a burden for the lost, not a burden of debt.

Because there is a need to serve some men who are not called to be pastors, we also have an MA program, and a specific track of MA that trains both deacons and ruling elders.

We also have two post-graduate research degree programs at the seminary, the ThM and the ThD. Admission to these advanced degree programs is very selective; they are intended for men who are actively engaged in pastoral ministry or missions, and have opportunity to serve the global church through ministerial education.

Distance Program

Some men are providentially hindered from studying in person for part of their study at Greenville Seminary. We provide distance education through a synchronous, in-class experience for students with this need.

Distance/Mentor Study Program

Our Distance Program allows qualified students to participate in class in real time, interacting with both professors and students.  Students must have the formal approval of their overseeing church court (i.e., session, elder board, or presbytery) to study via the Distance Study Program. Incoming distance students are expected to attend orientation on campus in the fall semester of the first year.

At least 12 credit hours for the MDiv/BDiv must be completed in residence at GPTS. The residency requirement can be met by attending week-long intensive classes on-campus; fulfillment of the residency requirement may be spread out across a student’s program of study (over 4-6 years).
